A little more about Jenny N James:
We met on Craigslist in 2014 when both artists were looking for a musical partner to duo up with and get out on the town playing live music. We met in OB for the first time and started practicing on Wednesday nights during the OB Farmers Markets. We set up with a tip jar, lyrics and chords and had fun making tips while "practicing" in front of strangers. Blackbird by the Beatles was our first song we ever tried, and to this day one of our personal favorites to cover.
Jenny Tormey is a singer/songwriter based in San Diego, California. Born with music in her blood from a family of singers and music lovers, Jenny has always been a creative soul looking for the spotlight. Growing up in dance and cheer, she realized the stage was where she belonged and felt most alive. After graduating from college, Jenny was finally able to take control of her singing career and put time into her truest dreams, which is when she went on the hunt for James. Jenny N James have been singing around San Diego the past three years at local restaurants and bars part time, while Jenny also created a couple dance hits with local DJ's (one of which has surpassed One Million plays on Spotify.) With a full time career in radio where everything is based around music, concerts, and radio tours, Jenny feels everything in her life has prepared her for this moment to become a well rounded full package artist. For Jenny, music is everything and she is so excited to be creating music every day.
I’ve been playing guitar since I was about 12. I had private lessons almost from the beginning, and later studied music at National Guitar Workshop, Austin Community College, and Musician’s Institute. My younger years in Austin had a big influence on me. When we first moved there, my mom, my brother and I would go out regularly to see live music, often at a club called Antone’s, where we saw Buddy Guy, Gatemouth Brown, and many other great blues players. Seeing live music became my favorite pastime, and I became a bit obsessed with jazz and blues. When I was 19, I lost my mom when she took her own life. After she was gone I faced a pretty turbulent time in my life, moving around to different cities, trying to find my place, while helping my family. Through it all, I was always inspired by the memories of the early days seeing shows with my family, and it was always music that helped me get through the hard times. My favorite song is actually called Hard Times, by David Fathead Newman, who was the first artist we saw when we moved to Austin in 93, and my first ever jazz concert. Whenever I lose focus in my life, I can put on that song, and it gives me perspective, and a reason to keep playing and practicing. I hope that my music can have the same effect on someone that that show had on me, or at least lift someone’s mood when they’re too down.
In 2010 I moved to San Diego, and got the chance to focus on myself again after being relieved of some of the responsibilities of taking care of my family due to my sister taking over them. About three years ago I met Jenny, and we learned a few songs and started getting out to play shows here and there. We always have a great time playing. It seems natural when we play, and I’m excited to see what happens when we start writing, and arranging more original music.
